Mold is your Ascension Parish home!

Now that the flood waters are receding in Ascension Parish and we have taken the last couple of weeks mucking, gutting, removing personal belonging’s and drywall. It’s time to really think about the mold that is growing in your home. I was shocked to learn from several clients that they had been eager beavers, putting new drywall in immediately after removing everything down to studs. They thought this was enough to remove all soaked items and begin hanging new drywall. I told them to stop what they are doing immediately. Before you take action to restore your home it MUST dry out. Sure, you think everything is back to normal, new drywall is up, you have bought a few new items to make your house feel like home again but behind those walls, if it wasn’t dried out properly and treated for mold growth is a breeding ground for mold. You can buy a moisture meter at Home Depot or any home improvement store for as little as $40.00. A small price to pay for saving your life. I’m not being over dramatic, Black mold can kill you! We in South Louisiana are the perfect habitat for this. Warm, moist and dark homes are a perfect environment for those nasty mold spores. You don’t have to take my word for it, I have posted below some links that talk about the dangers of mold, how it affects your health and what you can do to prevent it NOW before it spreads like wild-fire in your home, black mold being the most dangerous.

                                                       What is black Mold?

“Toxic black mold, or Stachybotrys chartarum, as it’s known to scientists, can release spores as it feeds on organic materials in common household materials like drywall, carpet, insulation or sub-flooring that have been exposed to moisture. These spores, if ingested or inhaled, can cause a range of unpleasant and even dangerous symptoms in humans.

The most common black mold symptoms and health effects are associated with a respiratory response. Chronic coughing and sneezing, irritation to the eyes, mucus membranes of the nose and throat, rashes, chronic fatigue and persistent headaches can all be symptomatic of black mold exposure or black mold poisoning.

In particularly severe cases of prolonged exposure, black mold health effects can be more dangerous. Often compounded by allergic reaction to the black mold spores, these symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, and bleeding in the lungs and nose.

Toxic black mold can be costly to remove, and black mold exposure and black mold poisoning can cause a wide range of health problems, some of them severe. Understanding black mold symptoms and health effects can help you and your family identify these indicators and take swift action to protect your health and your home.” via http://www.hgtv.com/remodel/interior-remodel/black-mold-symptoms-and-health-effects

Several years from now, many of these flooded homes will be coming on the market. It’s important now to make the right decisions. When you are rebuilding your home is the perfect time to get it right the first time. Buyer’s looking forward will be very savvy about mold and you do not want to make your family or future families sick because you hadn’t properly rid your home of toxic mold. Inspectors in the future will be taking mold meters in homes and gauging how much mold is in the air, If your home doesn’t pass, I can assure you the buyers will be choosing another house. It’s important to me that everyone remains healthy after this flood. The effects of it hopefully, with the right treatment, will not effect our health or our homes.

Please stay safe out there “because YOU matter”
